How To Make a Smoked Old Fashioned Cocktail.
The Smoked Old Fashioned is probably one of the best-known and certainly one of the easiest (and tastiest) smoked cocktails you can make. The distinct flavor and aroma added by the Black Walnut bitters and raw sugar syrup, coupled with the depth of flavor provided by infusing it with smoke turns the classic Old Fashioned cocktail into something spectacular!

You will need:
- A rocks glass.
- A separate mixing glass (just about any tall glass will do; the heavier the better).
- SmokeyDrinks Drink Smoker (with wood chips), Butane Brûlé torch, bar spoon or Stainless Steel Drink Stirrer, OR, the SmokeyDrinks Complete Drink Smoking Kit.
- Ice (to chill and serve).
Ingredients
- 2–3 Dashes of Black Walnut Bitters
- 2oz Good Quality Bourbon.
- 1oz Demerara Syrup (recipe below).
- 2” Piece of Orange Peel.
Instructions
- Add ice to a rocks glass, then follow the directions on our Drink Smoker to smoke the ice.
- While the ice is smoking, in a separate mixing glass, add the bitters, Bourbon and syrup. Add ice and stir with a bar spoon or drink mixer for about 20 seconds to chill thoroughly.
- Remove the Drink Smoker from the smoked ice glass and strain the liquid over the smoked ice cubes.
- Hold the orange peel over the glass and twist (which will release a little aromatic orange oil onto the top of your drink). Rub orange peel around the rim of the glass and drop peel into drink. Enjoy!
Notes
Make a super-simple Demerara or Turbinado Syrup in advance. Add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of raw sugar to a small saucepan, heat on medium-low, stirring until combined. Allow to cool, transfer to a bottle or other container and store in the fridge.

Outstanding! Very smooth with a wonderful aroma. I’ve always loved the Old Fashioned, but this takes it to a higher level. Definitely worth the extra effort to add the smoke.

My drink smoker kit arrive today and this was the first cocktail I tried to make. WOW!! Super easy to use the drink smoker (I used the cedar/cabernet wood chips) and I’ll probably never go back to an unsmoked old fashioned again. A big hit with the wife too! I’ll definitely make this again (probably in about 15-20 minutes ha ha).

WOW! The combination of the orange fragrance and smoke flavor really elevated my favorite cocktail. I got my drink smoker yesterday and it was really easy to use.
