How To Make a Smoked Manhattan Cocktail.
The Smoked Manhattan is another very simple cocktail to make, and just like our Smoked Old Fashioned, it only has 3 basic (but distinctly different) ingredients.
Whereas our Smoked Old Fashioned combines bourbon, demerara (raw) sugar syrup and black walnut bitters, the Manhattan is a mix of American rye whiskey, sweet Italian vermouth, and brought to life with a few dashes of Angostura bitters. Infusing the Manhattan with smoke takes this timeless classic to a whole new level.

Description
The Smoked Manhattan is a variation of one of the world’s most famous cocktails. The classic combination of rye whiskey, sweet vermouth and Angostura bitters is further elevated by infusing it with smoke. Because a Manhattan is served ‘straight-up’ (no ice), the first thing to do is smoke the glass itself, or for a more smoky flavor, you can smoke the ice in the glass you’ll serve it in (or drink it from), then transfer that ice into your mixing glass (after adding the ingredients), stir it, then strain the liquids back into your serving (drinking) glass. It sounds more complicated than it is, and if you like that extra smoky flavor, it’s well worth the extra few seconds of effort.
Ingredients
- 2 Dashes of Angostura Bitters.
- 1 Dash of Orange Bitters (optional, see notes).
- 2oz Rye Whiskey.
- 1oz Sweet Vermouth.
- Maraschino Cherry (to garnish).
Instructions
- Place your drink smoker over a rocks glass and follow the directions to smoke the glass. If you want to smoke the ice too (for a smokier flavor), fill the glass with ice, then proceed to smoke it.
- While the glass (or glass and ice) is smoking, in a separate mixing glass, add the bitters, whiskey and vermouth. If you are only smoking the other glass, add ice and stir with a bar spoon or drink stirrer to chill (about 20-30 turns). If you smoked the ice in the other glass, then don’t add ice to the mixing glass – just transfer the smoked ice to your mixing glass, then stir.
- Strain the mixed drink into your smoked glass, garnish with a Maraschino cherry (or brandied cherry), and serve.
Notes
The classic Manhattan recipe calls for two dashes of Angostura bitters, but the addition of a single dash of orange bitters helps brighten the cocktail’s edges, bringing the whiskey and vermouth together seamlessly.

Very nice. The smoke flavor definitely makes a big difference compared to a regular Manhattan.
